All levels of ability/experience welcome
January 22nd 2011 Theme: Developing "Teng Jin"
Teng Jin (Listening Energy) is an important aspect of Tai Chi. Through cooperation with a partner your sensitivity will be increased, and your own strengths and weaknesses revealed, giving you plenty to work on!
February 12th 2011 Theme: Improving "Chum Chi"
Stress tends to cause tension in the upper body, which in turn leads to discomfort. When we let go of this tension (like when we sigh) the muscles and breathing relax and we feel more settled. In Tai Chi this is called "sinking the energy" or in Chinese "Chum Chi", and with enough practice it becomes habitual, enabling us to deal more ably with stressful situations without becoming tense.
March 12th 2011 Theme: Exploring "Peng Jin"
Peng Jin (sometimes called "Ward-Off Energy") is possibly the most important quality in Tai Chi. This is because all other expressions of Energy must contain Peng Jin. Without Peng, there is no structure to Tai Chi movement and it becomes weak and meaningless. With Peng, the Form has a strong, yet yielding flow.
April 16th 2011 Theme: Self-Defence
The self-defence aspect of Tai Chi Chuan is essential to gaining a comprehensive understanding of the art. Without postures in the Form being applied and tested one can never know whether the correct alignments are in place to therefore glean all the benefits. This workshop will be approached in a friendly, relaxed and non-competitive way.
May 21st 2011 Theme: Concept of "Sung"
"Sung" literally translates as "relax/relaxed", but in relation to Tai Chi it means more; it is the elusive quality which we all strive for in our practice (the loose/open yet powerful feeling that is unique to the art). When present in your practice effortless strength is achieved, the joints are loosened and muscles are stretched and toned.
June 18th 2011 Theme: Applying "Yi" or Intention
In the Tai Chi Classics it is written: "Without intention energy cannot arrive". In other words Tai Chi movements must have a clear purpose for the Chi to flow, thereby bringing about any health benefits or martial usefulness.
July 16th 2011 Theme: Tui Shou (Pushing Hands)
Tui Shou is a flowing exercise practiced with a partner. It improves balance, coordination and posture, and is vital for anyone wishing to explore the Self-Defence aspect of Tai Chi. We will look at the first four energies of the Ba Gua (fundamental principles).
August 20th 2011 Theme: Questions & Answers
This is a great opportunity to work on anything you want. We will arrange the Workshop around the wishes of all attendees, so have a good think about anything you're unsure of, or simply would like to improve on, and we'll take it from there!
September 17th 2011 Theme: Applying "Spiralling Energy"
From Galaxies down to DNA everything within the Universe is in Spiral form. This is Nature's Way. When this principle is applied to Tai Chi, your Form will become three-dimensional, therefore amplifying the health and martial benefits.
October 22nd 2011 Theme: "Ta Lu"
Ta Lu is a dynamic Tui Shou (Push Hands) routine. Performed with a partner it is dance-like and good fun. Ta Lu completes the Tui Shou picture, enabling the practitioner to use the secondary four energies of the Ba Gua (fundamental principles).
November 19th 2011 Special Christmas Workshop (shared lunch from 1-2pm) Theme: Yang Cheng Fu's 10 Essential Principles
Yang Cheng Fu, grandson of the founder of Yang style Tai Chi (Yang Lu Chan), and most famous Tai Chi Master to date, compiled these ten essetial points to help guide practitioners in achieving maximum rewards.
Cost: £21
